Easier eye patching for children with Kinderoptics

Disclaimer: Suzy at Kinderoptics gave me a discount on our patches order in exchange for this review, but all opinions are my own. I am not affiliated with Suzy or any patching companies.

As an Orthoptist, I follow patients with amblyopia and often prescribe patching as part of their treatment. We tell the patients that they can find basic adhesive eye patches at their local pharmacy.

Sometimes they have difficulty finding these bandage-like patches, but finding them is only the first step.  The next step is getting the child to wear the patch.  The children are usually too young to understand that wearing the patch is helping their vision and that they only have a small "critical period" in which their eyes and brain can basically learn how to see before it becomes too late.

When we were told that Luke should start patching, I was able to see patching from this perspective. Luke doesn't have glasses, so we attempted the sticky patch, but it was too sticky. We attempted the black "pirate patch" but it was too tight. We attempted the felt patch with a soccer ball on it but it was too boring.

I started searching the internet and was excited to find KinderPatches at Kinderoptics! Suzy is a mom and licensed optician who took matters into her own hands and created very fun and comfortable patches. I purchased some plano glasses for Luke (meaning there is no prescription in them), and let him pick out some patches! He picked out BB8, Luke Skywalker, Spiderman, Ninja Turtles, Darth Vader, and Batman.

So far, so good! Luke is only allowed to watch his television show in the morning while wearing his patch, and he is compliant with it so far! He is comfortable and loves choosing which character he wears.  Thank you to Suzy for her creativity and ingenuity, Luke is a compliant "patcher" and I'll be excited to report that to his Ophthalmologist at his next appointment!
