Block Island Suncare Sunscreen Review

Disclosure: I received a bottle of Block Island Suncare sunscreen in exchange for my review but all opinions expressed are 100% my own.

Luke and I have eczema ridden skin.  It's dry, sensitive, and often irritated.  When Luke's face was recently burned by the sunscreen I put on his face, rather than the sun itself (we hadn't gone outdoors yet)...I knew we had to search for a different brand.

Luckily, I was introduced to Block Island Organics.  Block Island Organics is a majority women owned family company that started on Block Isand, Rhode Island.  The company strives to educate consumers, provide quality products, and simplify the skin care process.

We had the chance to try out their new Natural Mineral (zinc only) Sunscreen - SPF 30.  I am happy that it is safe and recommended to use for adults, kids, and babies over 6 months so the whole family can use one bottle.  All of the Block Island Organic products are free of parabens, sulfates, petrochemicals, phthalates, dyes, and artificial fragrances.  They also use vegan-based formulas and do not use animal testing.  The sunscreen provides broad spectrum UVA/UVB.

The sunscreen starts fairly opaque when you put it on so that you can ensure full coverage but then quickly is absorbed.  It is more fluid that the brand we had been using, so a little bit goes a long way which is great when you're covering a whole family each day!  I love the nostalgic smell of typical sunscreen but that fragrance may be part of what causes so much irritation for our skin, and the lotion may be doing more harm than good.  This sunscreen has a very subtle smell and feels like a moisturizing lotion.

I try to be an educated consumer, especially when it comes to products for my family.  But many times, Luke is headed out the door and I have to cover him with whatever sunscreen is nearby.  I feel relieved that I can trust this company to disclose all of their ingredients and keep up with the most recent skin care research, all for an affordable price.  Skin cancer rates continue to rise and it runs in our family.  I'm happy to find a company that wants to keep my family healthy and safe.

Block Island Organics also has skin cleansers and moisturizers.  Follow Block Island Organics on TwitterFacebookPinterestInstagram and Google+!

Rug pad review and giveaway from RugPadUSA

Disclosure: I received a rug pad from RugPadUSA in exchange for my review but all opinions expressed are 100% my own. Information about rug pads was provided to me by Rug Pad USA marketing department.

When we bought our house last year, our biggest renovation was the hardwood floor installation throughout the house.  We went back and forth on the decision but were thrilled with the result.

Once we had spent the money on the floors, we were somewhat shocked by the prices of area rugs that we now had to buy for each room!  We found a few that we liked and placed them around the house without rug pads.

What I didn't realize is that we should have immediately invested in some high quality rug pads.  We weren't interested in spending more money, and nobody sees the rug pad, anyway.  Yet, here are some facts about rug pads that I did not know, and why we chose to get a rug pad from Rug Pads USA:

1.  Most rug pads are made with PVC or plastic which often has chemicals and toxins that can ruin and discolor floors over time, and serve as breeding grounds for odor causing bacteria and VOC emissions.  Rug Pad USA uses eco-friendly materials like 100% natural rubber tree sap so that it grips floors rather than sticks to them.  Their materials have very low VOCs.  I'm especially happy about this as we have toddlers and babies crawling around our home!

2.  Most rug pads come from oversees. Rug Pad USA is a rug pad retailer based outside of the Greater New York area, specializing in the manufacturing of high end, eco-friendly rug pads that are made in the USA.

3.  Most rug pads come with an unpleasant odor when you unpack them due to the cheap materials used to make them. Our rug pad had no odor to it when we unpacked it from shipping.

4. Certain types rug pads cannot absorb and release moisture. Often in hot and humid climates, or with glossy floor finishes, the oils can react with the floor finish causing permanent damage.  Floor staining is never an issue for Rug Pad USA.

5.  Most rug pads will not last more than a few years but consumers don't know this as they generally don't look under their rugs.  Most rug pads do not come with a warranty that protects your floors if they get damaged.  Rug Pad USA guarantees their pads for 20 years and guarantees that their pads will not stain, mar, or discolor any flooring surfaces if used in accordance with your flooring manufacturers instructions.

6.  The untrained eye cannot tell the difference in rug pad quality.  RugPad USA customer service did a great job explaining my options and helped me find the rug pad that would be best for our floors.

I am so happy we went with this rug pad.  It gives the rug much more cushion for playing and walking.  The pad has prevented the rug from slipping out of place, and the pads are said to help the rugs last longer.  The pads are also said to keep the rug anchored when vacuuming.  The Rug Pad USA website is easy to use.  You can shop by floor surface, size, or material.  You can choose to have the pad the same size as your rug, or have them trim it evenly around.  I was so impressed with how fast the rug pad was shipped and it was easy to set up.  Overall, the rug feels richer, thicker, and softer while protecting our beautiful new floors underneath.

Elle's He{art} Designs Etsy shop: adorable newborn baby hats

I'm so happy to share this unique and local (to me) Etsy shop for adorable baby hats!  Elle's He(art) Designs is a Chicopee, Massachusetts based shop for newborn items that are "handcrafted from the heart."

Meet Michelle, the woman behind it all!  She is a mom of two: Luke (16) and Leia (7), and has two tea cup Chihuahuas. Michelle enjoys leisure hiking, working out, and going to the beach.  She is a huge coffee lover and an active member of her church, New Day.

When Michelle suffered from a back injury, her "type A" personality kicked in and she had trouble sitting still.  She had been crafting since the age of seven, and decided to use this talent and recovery time to start a business!  She has now been in business just under five years.

I love the simple design and the soft material that Michelle uses.  I knew right away that this was what I wanted to get for my newborn niece, Joy.  The hats are perfect for newborn pictures, yet are stretchy so the baby can get plenty of everyday use as well.  The material is also light enough for any season.  My order was timely and even artistically packaged!

My beautiful new niece, Joy.

Michelle has been recognized around her community for her sponsorship of local events and charities like The Ronald McDonald House and the NICU.  She especially likes to support events and charities involving children and animals.  Her work is currently featured in five retail locations in the New England area:

Carey's Flowers in South Hadley, MA
Mormor in Shelburne Falls, MA
Hannah Grimes Marketplace, Main Street, Keen, NH
Bashista Orchards in Southampton, MA
Ladybug Boutique in Middletown, CT

Michelle has a Facebook page here and you can find her Etsy shop here.  You can also contact her through email: EllesHeartDesign(at)yahoo(dot)com.
