The Need to be Kneaded...why you should get a massage today!

Caring for my little Luke has been the best thing in the world, but has certainly been taxing on my body.  I have gained such respect for massages and the benefits of massage after my mom gave me the gift of Angie, a Licensed Massage Therapist from Oksana Salon and Spa.  I am so excited that she agreed to write a guest post on massage for moms!  If you want to read more of what Angie has to say, please check out her new blog, Kneading You.  And without further's Angie!    

Why should any woman get a massage? Well, I can think of very many reasons, can you? It helps to decrease pain, reduce stress, reduce anxiety, rid toxins, promote posture...shall I go on? I am certified in Pregnancy and/or Prenatal Massage, and it gives me an opportunity to help both mom and baby.

There are so many changes in the body pre/post pregnancy. Coming from my own experiences, I thought I had it all figured out and it was the most profound, exciting, stressful experience of my life. I was going to have a natural birth (not), I was going to breastfeed (only for a month), I was going to only do natural foods (ummm), I was not going to vaccinate my child (hahahaha). My pregnancy was amazing, no morning sickness, not too many aches and pains, (until my 3rd trimester), but I think this had a lot to do with the fact that I was receiving a massage once a month after my 2nd trimester! My son was born 2 weeks after my due date. I had no amniotic fluids left, and the baby was stressed. After a horrible 12 hours in labor no drugs, they gave me an epidural only to rush me to a emergency c-section. Come to find out the cord had been wrapped around his neck, not once, but twice!

As a new mom, four days later I got home, stitches, pads, carrying around this beautiful child, massaging him, feeding him, holding him, changing him, crying with break only to shower for 2 minutes, to be back at it. My shoulders were tight, my belly and boobs sagging, my hips popping in and out, my arms exhausted, my neck all tilted and shrugged to one side..sound familiar to you moms out there?

I can go on and on about my story, but what I really want to focus this blog and your time to is you! How are YOU feeling? When do you make time for YOU? Can you give on hour a month to yourself? Moms/woman don't realize the stress that that they take on. We as woman worry, want to help, fix, nuture, work, ect. then we pay for it later. We try to wait until, one day we wake up and say, "I can't move, I know, I will book a massage!". Then, sometimes we call up, and there is no availability, and we pop a couple ibuprofen, asprin, tylenol, and call it a day. I know first hand how this works, guess what? I've done it!

What I can tell you is yes, massage pre/post pregnancy is very important, for your mind, body and soul, as well as your child's. Give yourself a break, I am 3.5 years post pregnancy and my body is still jammed up. It takes time ladies. Allow yourself that-TIME! Things in life are temporary as much as we think in the moment its forever!

Some key things:

  • Come get a massage once a month
  • Stretch everyday
  • Switch sides(balance)
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Do some exercise/yoga
  • Get plenty of sleep
  • Try to maintain healthy nutrition (take some supplements if you don't get enough vitamins through foods)

I have a lot of experience not only with massage but, also being a new mom! I have had to do a lot of trial and error. What works for me, or someone else, may not work for you. But, if you are feeling overwhelmed, give yourself a hour break and find out why you NEED to be Kneaded!
